Leslie Hanthorne - 22 May 2019

Picture
Photographer Leslie Hanthorne is one of the main characters in the recent BBC four-part series The Chronicles of Mourne. Together with Buddy he has explored the Mournes, seeking out viewpoints for the images to feature in his annual calendar. Few photographers know this area better than Leslie and we are delighted that he will be the Club's guest on 22 May 2019.

"Before I became interested in photography I was a hill walker, mostly in the Mourne Mountains. It was the beauty of this Landscape that inspired me to pick up a camera in the first place," says Leslie.

"To help with the technical skills needed to master landscape photography I went on a photo course to the Scottish Highlands and I remember the instructor saying "I can teach you everything that your camera can do but I cannae train the eye." I believe it is this vision, rather than fancy cameras and lenses that define us as photographers.

"My Samoyed Buddy has been with me every step of this incredible journey and has grown into a very loyal and faithful companion. The Mournes, like all mountainous regions, are a harsh and hostile environment to work in and unless you give 100% commitment, it is going to be very hard to stay safe and get pictures that you are pleased with.

!I think it is fair to say that this place has defined me as a photographer, and a person, and it is this passion that I take and apply to all genres of my photography.

"Composition and light... This is where I begin when I approach a photograph, whether this is capturing the brooding mystery of the ocean, the glowing translucence of a sunrise, or the nerves, emotion, and romance of a bride’s big day."
