NI Photographic Association
Between September and March, NIPA organises a series of five interclub competitions. Up to four mono prints, four colour prints, and four Projected Digital Image (PDI) entries can be entered by each club member for each round. Prints have to be mounted, and the maximum mount size is 30cm x 40cm, or smaller. The prints themselves can be any size that fits within the maximum mount size. PDI's must be in jpeg form, sRGB colour space, with a maximum width of 1600 pixels and a maximum height of 1200 pixels.
Two of the rounds have a theme or a topic and the remaining three rounds are open. This year we have "Landscape photography" for Round 2 in November 2018 and "Transport" for Round 4 in February 2020. See below for the deadline for each round.
Points
The NIPA points scoring system is one to five as follows:
1 means ‘well below average.
2 means ‘below average’.
3 means ‘average’.
4 means ‘above average’.
5 means ‘well above average’ or ‘outstanding’.
Novice Definition
A person will not be considered a ‘Novice’ if they:
a. Obtain two ‘Starred’ images in any NIPA Competition; (For the purposes of this definition, a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in any NIPA Competition is considered to be the equivalent of a ‘Starred’ image)
b. Obtain a 3rd level academic photographic qualification;
c. Obtain a distinction from a National or International photographic body;
d. Obtain two acceptances in Salons, Open Exhibitions or the PAGB Inter-Federation Annual Print and PDI Competition;
e. Offer their photographic services, training or skills development for remuneration.
At any time, in relation to subsequent NIPA Competitions, the Competition Committee may, in consultation with the camera club, review the standard of an entrant's photography.
Judges
For the two themed rounds, we generally ask an outside independent judge to select the first, second, and third image for each section of these rounds. The open rounds are judged by the club members themselves. We select the twelve images to go through to NIPA. Even if your images are not selected to go forward to NIPA for final judging, you will get valuable feedback about your photography. And you do not have to have entered the competition yourself to take part in the club judging.
A panel of three judges score the images that go through to the final of each round and the top images are given a "Star". All images are then displayed at the Display and Adjudication evenings, held in association with one of NIPA’s member societies.
Deadlines for entries:
Round 1 (Open): 24 September 2019
Round 2 (Landscapes): 22 October 2019
Round 3 (Open): 3 December 2019
Round 4 (Transport): 21 January 2020
Round 5 (Open): 18 February 2020
If you have never entered a round of the NIPA Interclub Competition to prospect can seem daunting but it is nowhere near as scary or difficult as it may sounds – honestly! Paul Mcilwaine is the Club’s NIPA Representative and he, or many of the members who have entered rounds in the past, will be happy to share their experience with those thinking about entering.
